Sketch App Review – Pros & Cons

I’ll bet most of you would agree on that. We live in a world where most designer or even
Non-designers people like you and me have used Adobe products at least once in your life. Even most small-scale businesses use Adobe’s products.

But today I am gonna share my honest opinion in my Sketch App Review. I will list out the pros and cons too of the software so you check for yourself.

Note – If you are PC user, don’t care to read more, sorry wasting your time 😛

Just kiddin, Sketch is only available on the Mac platform, still no support for Windows.

Let me confess that Adobe’s app is not great at UI (User Interface), Sketch is way better. I know there are lot of alternatives, but Sketch is way amazing.

Let’s see if Sketch lives up the hype or not.

I have divided the review into few parts so it’s easy to go through.

What is Sketch?

Sketch is essentially a vector graphics editor for the MacOS platform. It was developed by the Dutch Company, Bohemian Coding. It was first released at 2011.

The company promotes it as a “digital design toolkit”.

Some features include –

  • Code Export
  • Vector Editing
  • iOS Mirroring
  • Grids and Guides
  • Pixel Precision
  • Complete Toolkit

Last year in 2017, I thought to give Sketch a try and it really worked wonders for me. Being a Adobe user for a long time, Sketch felt quite a competitor.

I know there will be people who think Adobe is the best etc, but it comes down to personal preference and what people are comfortable in using.

Why Sketch?

It’s not that Photoshop doesn’t have the feature that Sketch provides you.

It’s about the UI and how it presents you the features.

Some features which I am love in –

Color Picker Tool

The Color Picker Tool is just a Ctrl + C away. It is just a magnifying glass that will help you pick the color from anywhere with the up most of accuracy.

Color Panel

It’s way easier to manage than one you will find Photoshop. All the attributes of the layer is shown in the side window. You will also find the existing color palette on the side. This helps to be consistent with the brand colors.

Styled Text

If you use WordPress or HTML , you must knowing about H1,H2,H3 tags. You can actually do this with your text styles. This way all the text on the page stays consistent and fonts too. Saves up a lot of time 🙂

Some more Features

When working with rounded corner shape style on Photoshop, when resizing it you may have noticed that they corners are also affected. But that’s not the case with Sketch, it won’t affect the corners.

This might be a small thing but it’s saves up a lot of time for me.

You know how many steps it takes to create a blur effect on Photoshop. It takes more than 5.

In Sketch application, you just need is to create a rectangle shape and then you need to  give it a “background blur” effect. This will blur the background of whatever is behind the subject.

Symbols…lots of them

Anytime you got stuck in finding good icons or symbols?

Well, with Sketch you need not worry about that. This is because with Sketch you get icons with the software itself. Quite handy . Ain’t it ?

In every Sketch file, you will have library of symbols. You use it in apps or for your website design. You also categorize the symbols by putting a slash. This way you can find it faster and save a ton of time.

Export Slices

I used this feature in Fast Stone Capture. It’s a app which lets takes screenshots and edit them.

You have slices feature in Sketch app, this will let you easily export a part of the image in the format of your choice.

You can also share your work on the web with a simple drag and drop.

There are some pre built templates too, like a template to build an app screen etc.

The simplicity of the application really has won many hearts.

Use of Screen as Pages etc

In Sketch application you can manage a whole task in one file! You won’t need enourmous 1GB PSDs or a dozen different PSDs for every screen of your application or site. Sketch files are relatively light-weight in comparison to Photoshop.

In Sketch you have find Pages, something which you will find on Adobe Indesign.

It’s very simple to create more and with just a simple keyboard shortcut (fn+arrow up/down) or by using the pages popup you can move between them.

While working a particular screen and you want to try out different variations , just duplicate the existing Artboard. Quite simple in comparison to Adobe Photoshop.

Pros of the Sketch App

1. It’s quite simple to use. The overall UI and ease of using it quite amazing. You will easily get the hang of it in a few days of use. Try out for yourself.

2. There’s no better app for vector drawing as sketch. Also great for general layout.

3. In today’s world, cloud is become a staple for everyone, specially for businesses. You can easily share your work and even feedback using the share feature.

4. Apart from that, you can make use of additional plugins to make your job.

5. At 99$ it’s quite super affordable too.

Cons of Sketch App

1. Bugs…Bugs .. There are tons of bugs that are sometimes quite annoying. Please fix them 😛

The most common problems I faced was –

While typing, let’s say a sentence, sometimes the whole sentence disappears and you can see it when you finish typing.

I also saw some images disappear which I copied and pasted from the Web. No way to get the images back. Really irritating.

Sometimes Command + Z doesn’t works the way you want it to be. It’s quite cumbersome sometimes.

2. Some plugins still crash.

3. It’s MAC only app.

4. Some capabilities are still missing.

I think in the coming years Sketch app will be open to more designers as they will launch the PC version of their app.

Can you all together ditch Adobe Photoshop?

Not yet.

There’s is no photo editing capability in the Sketch app unlike its competitor Photoshop. When creating a mockup for your work you will need to use Photoshop.

Whats Next!

Sketch is quite a promising application in the world of design. I was frustrated at myself for not trying out Sketch application sooner. It’s a great piece of software that I think every graphic designer should try.

I’ll bet you won’t take too long to get the hang of the application. Sketch can seriously dominate the industry in the future.

The final verdict would be that Sketch is a great application and can help you get your sh**t done. Even if you are a beginner or a pro , do try out the trial and see for yourself if you like it.

There are some great tutorials on YouTube that you will love.
